However, the phobia of Friday 13th may be linked to the arrest and mass execution of the Knights Templar on 13th October 1307 (Friday). The fear of number 13 is called as Triskaidekaphobia One of the oldest references of number 13 phobia has been found in the Mesopotamian Code of Hammurabi. This is a Babylonian code of law dating back to around 1760 BC. The laws are numbered but number 13 is skipped. There are biblical references of number thirteen. Apparently, there were 13 people present at the Last Supper - Jesus and his 12 Apostles. Weird fact about number 13! Knights Templar, who were believed to be protecting the Holy Grail (the cup Jesus drank from at the Last Supper) as well as other holy objects. When the French King Philip IV lost a war with England, he conspired with Pope Clement V. Thus, the Knights Templar were arrested on charges of Satanism and executed.

7. Some tragic events that happened on 13th!

  • The October 13, 1989 is known is “black Friday” and “Friday the 13th mini crash”.  This is because the stock market crash that occurred on this date. The aftermath of this was economic recession in early 1990.
  • On April 17, 2018, the southwest airlines flight 1380 had an uncontained engine failure. Surprisingly, the fault was in number-13 fan blade of the engine. This accident caused one casualty.

8. Vehicle registration in Ireland skips the 13 instead they use the number 131!

In Ireland, the first two digits of a vehicle number plate represent the year of registration of the vehicle; 10 for 2010, 11 for 2011 etc. however, given the common superstition or the fear of number 13, the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) decided its alterative. Therefore, the authorities allowed them to use 131 and 132 instead of 13, for the vehicles registered in year 2013.

Taylor Swift – the famous pop star was born December 13, 1989. Interestingly, she believes that number 13 is lucky for her. During her interview to MTV News in 2009, she stated:

10. In 1881, a group of New Yorkers tried to end this number 13 superstition!

In 1881, a US Civil War veteran Captain William Fowler founded a group in order to end the number 13 superstition. The club was named “The Thirteen Club” and it has 13 members. They had their first meeting on January 13, 1881, and they chose Room 13 of the venue. The activities of this club were regularly reported in leading newspapers.
